How does deep breathing enhance the nervous system?

Deep breathing directly affects the vagus nerve, which is why it is so effective at making us feel calm. When we practise deep breathing exercises, it stimulates the vagus nerve and promotes the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for the body’s rest and relaxation responses. This can help calm the body's stress response and promote feelings of safety and connection.

Deep breathing can also benefit the heart in several ways. When you take slow, deep breaths, it activates the parasympathetic nervous system and helps to reduce heart rate and lower blood pressure, further promoting a state of relaxation.

Deep breathing can improve mental health in many ways: 

  1. Stress Reduction: Deep breathing activates the body's relaxation response, which helps reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol. This can promote feelings of calmness and decrease overall stress levels.

  2. Anxiety Management: Deep breathing can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety by slowing down the heart rate and activating the parasympathetic nervous system. It promotes a sense of grounding and can interrupt the cycle of anxious thoughts.

  3. Improved Mood: Deep breathing techniques stimulate the release of endorphins, the body's natural feel-good chemicals. This can lead to an uplifted mood and increased feelings of well-being.

  4. Enhanced Focus and Concentration: Deep breathing exercises encourage mindfulness and present-moment awareness, which can improve focus, concentration, and cognitive function.

  5. Better Sleep: Deep breathing before bedtime can help calm the mind and body, making it easier to fall asleep and improve sleep quality.
